3AM Bash! Des Was A Bowie Fan ft. The Death of Pop / Majorettes / Joya LIVE!

Des Was a Bowie Fan is back at Paper Dress with a triumvirate of guests touching the live-wires of jangle-pop, garage punk, dreampop, shoegaze, surf and riot grrrl to help kick up the shit.

The Death of Pop have a swirling, atmospheric and summer-sweet sound with lyrical touches that play on your heartstrings. With dead-eyed accuracy the band themselves call it “Janglegaze”, an unrivalled superhero of a genre that flies with Trad Rock in a headlock, dancing in the spaces between My Bloody Valentine and Teenage Fanclub, soaring Pop songs and moments rising from the haze.

Majorettes have an EP called ‘Denim Jacket Girl in a Leather Jacket World’. With this in mind it should be enough of a description if we say that they’re as good as such a title suggests, playing a feral style of melodic riot-pop that’ll set the shop alight.

Joya meanwhile have a delicate, endearing sound that bubbles, roars, buzzes and twists like The Breeders and Weezer with the broad, playful pop sensibility of The Beatles.

Then at 10.30 Kerouac’s bandanna unfurls on the lampshade with the touch of a Crystals chorus, dimming the lights for the ghosts of swing jazz, jive, rock’n’roll, Motown, garage punk and Northern Soul to join the most shimmering, fuck-off indiepop, new wave, post-punk and klezmer till the milkman comes in the farmer’s wellies.

THE DEATH OF POP

“A dancing beatpop frenzy orchestrated by some beautiful cats full of the possibilities and poetry of Pop music. (…) Smartly distorted, dancing guitars and heartfelt lines that resemble The Cure, The Smiths and Teenage Fanclub rise from a My Bloody Valentine-esque dream haze” (Dai Goth)

MAJORETTES

Majorettes are a 4-piece band from London, an American-French-Cockney- Mexican-Italian mix completely DIY grrl riot, neo-punk, neo-pop and neo-noise and completely fun. Think Le Tigre meets The Stooges, an exciting mixture of high energy and sweet pop catchy tunes, driven by sweet melodies and vocals.

JOYA

“Melodic and tight knuckles-down garage pop” (Burn the Jukebox)
