The Final Night – Des Was a Bowie Fan ft. The Op Sa! Balkan Orchestra, The Trouble

Here we go with the final Des Was A Bowie Fan at Paper Dress Vintage, and the final night at the shop in its Shoreditch incarnation. For us it’s been two years of late-night ballers beneath the dresses; for Paper Dress eight years as a shop and four as a shop-cum-dancefloor on Curtain Road. All will be toasted with a cast of guests only previously conceived together in the mind of Gigi Meroni and his chicken on a lead, and a discotheque to put the hat on it!

Op Sa! are a firecracker of an orchestra using the roots of the Serbian Kolo and the Turkish Cocek to create their own passionate brand of Balkan brass music, playing roaring and beautiful songs from Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia and the Romani Culture alongside pulsing, textured and soul-stirring originals. A big, bold, rum-swilling 12-piece, their traditional brass section is coupled with clarinets, sax, electric guitars, darbouka and drums.

The Trouble are a leathered-up 60s girl group with an air of switchblade romance, a no-fucking-about “hard-drinkin’, back-combing biker babe bad-ass, tragedy-soaked trio backed by a posse of scaly lounge lizards with bloodied knuckles”. They’re out to snag your boyfriend, and will no doubt be found in a corner at the end of the night with The Rhondda Ramones, and in particular Roy Chords, who’s been known to put the face of another man’s wife on the crotch of his wrestling tights.

And returning to the night after tearing it up in January, the almighty Charla Fantasma go hand in hand with the most shit-kicking riot grrrl bands, shimmering away in the gaps between Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney with two-part vocals, heartbooming guitar lines and a Ramones-esque electricity.

Then at 11, Kerouac’s bandanna will land on the lampshade to the sounds of harp mood music, dimming the lights for the ghosts of swing jazz, rock’n’roll, Motown and Northern Soul to join the most shimmering, fuck off indiepop, new wave, garage punk, riot grrrl, klezmer and dixieland swing till the milkman comes.

All flaming limbs at the front line x
