Des Was a Bowie Fan vs Paper Dress ft. The Hayman Kupa Band, The Choo Choo Trains, Newstargazers & G

Des Was A Bowie Fan is a London clubnight playing indiepop, new wave, riot grrrl, rock’n’roll, gospel soul, 60s girl groups, 20s/30s and gypsy swing; from Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and The Supremes through to The Smiths, Blondie, Pulp, Belle and Sebastian, Martha & Tcha Limberger and His Budapest Gypsy Orchestra.
————————–————————–—–
For this night we’re blessed to have special guests of legendary lyrical indiepop proportions, a sweet 60s girl group / 50s nostalgia-tinged lo-fi Pop trio, and a rockabilly rocket that swings like a Texan Playboy.

The Hayman Kupa Band combine the unadorned Pop magic of Darren Hayman and Emma Kupa to create burning lyrical and melodic indiepop songs that doff a cap to the blinding country duets of yore. Like Merle Haggard and Dolly Parton on the outside of everything, or June Carter and Johnny Cash pissing on the rails.

The Choo Choo Trains have a lilting, soft and shimmering, heart-melting sound that has been lovingly titled “girl-guide shoegaze”, an irresistible melancholy magic and a slow indiepop, lo-fi waltz rhythm to make you dance and dream. The band have just released their second LP via Meat ‘n’ Tatty Tapes.

And Newstargazers play swinging rockabilly garage soul music for feral dancefloors, twanging vocals, driving rhythms, and brilliant flourishes of boogie woogie underneath.

Then at 10.30, Kerouac’s bandanna will land on the lampshade with the touch of a Crystals chorus, dimming the lights for the ghosts of swing jazz, jive, rock’n’roll and 60s Pop to join the most shimmering, fuck off indiepop, new wave, post-punk, riot grrrl, klezmer and Balkan brass till the milkman comes.

THE CHOO CHOO TRAINS
“There’s the spirit of 60s girl group pop at the heart of this tape. Colours reaches for the Spector sound on a budget and Rocket Bicycle captures the innocence of the Brill Building sound with a wink to Carole King’s songwriting.” (Did Not Chart)
“The Choo Choo Trains paint all their songs with dreamy 50s nostalgia and sweet as candy vocals. If The Choo Choo Trains were a stick of rock they’d have dream pop running right through them.” (The Girls Are)
The band’s second LP, Foggymotions, released on Meat ‘n’ Tatty Tapes, can be found at their Bandcamp.
