The idea: “As we all retreat further into kaleidoscopic personal echo chambers, the ‘big Other’ looms large on the outskirts of our individual experience and resonates through turbulent times, incomprehensible and outside yet necessary for our realities to make sense. For how long can we ignore it? Let’s get together and discover how to welcome it in.”

First 25 tickets sold get a free big Other zine of new work from Firestations, friends and collaborators which will include poetry, prose, graphic design and drawing.

Performing live:

MONDRIAN

Mondrian (a.k.a. Tom and Stu) takes the listener (a.k.a. you) on a multi-layered journey using a modular synth, an array of effects pedals and looped vocals and viola. Expect an experimental and improvised longform piece or two to ease you into the night.

THE LEAF LIBRARY

The Leaf Library are guitarist Matt Ashton (formerly of Peel favourites Saloon), singer Kate Gibson, bass player Gareth Jones (Wintergreen), drummer / synth wizard Lewis Young, and guitarist Simon Nelson (Cosines). They make multi-layered, two chord drone pop, channeling the warm fuzz of Yo La Tengo, the spacious repetition of Talk Talk, and Movietone’s seaside melancholy to beautiful effect. Live they bring a volume and intensity to their performances that’s belied by the gentle drift of their records, with motorik drums busying themselves over a bed of constantly unfurling synth tones. The band will be playing songs from their debut album Daylight Versions, as well as brand new material from their new album, due next year.

FIRESTATIONS

Firestations released their acclaimed debut album ‘Never Closer’ in 2014. (“Sunken, serene guitar pop”. DIY “Super, fuzzy stuff”. Dots and Dashes) After much gigging to support it, including festival outings to Indietracks, Aaaahfest (Germany) and Indiefjord (Norway) they hunkered down to record a second LP. ‘The Year Dot’ is now finished and ready to go (due to be released early 2018). On their new record the band has continued to explore a shared obsession – sketching simple pop songs before painting over them with drones, vocal harmonies, electronica and unexpected rhythms. For big Other no.1 they will preview a selection of new songs mixed in with some old, and perhaps a cover or two.
