NO CARS
We’re delighted to welcome Japanese funsters NO CARS for a final show at Paper Dress before we move!

“Drinks are spilt. Gobs are creaking open. There’s a girl group on stage – and Japan certainly seems to be their point of origin – but do human beings this uncomplicated really still exist?

Once you get over their innocence, the second most striking thing about No Cars is their gimmick; it’s a sheet music stand in front of the stage. On it are about 10 cards with illustrations on them.

After each song, they pull the cards off to reveal cartoons, maps… weird doodles. Which may well be very ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ – but it’s twisted too. The band play 1950s heartbreak classics with the odd screaming breakdown thrown in to keep the punks happy. Japanese bands are well known for ripping off the West and making it seem fresh – but this is actually moving.”ARTROCKER MAGAZINE

JIPSY
“Our songs range from swashbuckling sea-shanties to chilled-out Balkan-Latino grooves, passing through reggae, gypsy swing, jazz, country, and a sneaky bit of funk along the way. It’s all held together with a liberal application of folk and duct tape.”

NELE NEEDS A HOLIDAY
Nele Needs A Holiday is a Belgian-born London-based singer-songwriter with an all-female band. Nele (try to pronounce it as “naila” and you are getting close) writes songs about “the tragedies of daily life”: about the boyfriend that dumped you, about getting kicked out of art school, about creepy guys that are trying to get your telephone number while you try to concentrate on waiting for the train, about waking up and only vaguely remembering the dance moves you were inventing last night…

Nele is inspired by anti-folk heroes like Jeffrey Lewis, Daniel Johnston and The Moldy Peaches, but also by sixties girlbands like The Ronettes, The Chrystals and The Shangri-Las.
