The Music Box Folk & Acoustic Monthly!

Another night of musical goodness coming up on Wednesday October 9th… Music starts at 8pm and the fee on the door is a mere £3!

£3 on the door to see all these stunning artists:

All The Queen’s Ravens – 10pm
www.allthequeensravens.co.uk
An enigmatic six-piece at large on the London music scene. Their sound is a flamboyant bi-lingual mix of folk, pop and sultry flamenco alluding to blues, gospel and americana, delivering a foot-stomping, dress-swirling bagful of attention-grabbing magic.

Fronted by two ladies with a devilish vocal chemistry and style, their songs take a sidelong, passionate glance at obsession, death and good old fashioned romance, feverishly combining influences diverse as Kate Bush, Johnny Cash, Cat Power, Slayer, and the Punch Brothers to name but a few. Their songwriting is accomplished and intricate, nutured from the fires of misadventure and high drama in Hackney.

Sophie Jamieson and band – 9:10pm
www.sophiejamieson.co.uk
Having begun as a shy solo singer-songwriter, Sophie Jamieson’s project has evolved rapidly into something ambient and haunting. What were once quiet, melancholy folk songs are growing in strength and gaining atmosphere at the hands of her band, to provide one of the most engaging live sets taking place in London.

As hard-working as musicians come, Sophie spent her first year after graduating gigging relentlessly in the capital. The year has brought highlights of radio play on BBC 6Music and BBC Introducing, playing live in session for Amazing Radio, supporting Emily and the Woods, Keston Cobblers Club, Josh Record and a signing to boutique label Folkroom Records. Her debut, ‘Where EP’ was released in June 2013, launched with a sold-out show at The Slaughtered Lamb and has since gained wide praise from blogs and press. Sophie’s diligence has earned her a strong and ever-expanding reputation on the London music scene.

Sophie and her bandmates, Liam Hoflay and Alex Betancourt, continue to grace London venues on a regular basis. Drawing comparisons to the likes to Daughter, Sharon Van Etten and Beach House, the quiet three-piece are constantly pushing their sound, with the promise of yet more compelling material to come.

Tim Graham – 8:40pm
www.timgrahammusic.co.uk
With guitar playing that has “shades of Bert Jansch and Martin Simpson” (Glastonbury Folk Club) and a love of the narrative traditions of the British Isles, Tim wins fans wherever his travels take him with his sensitive and honest arrangements. Since 2010 Tim has been building his identity as one of the new generation of musicians who are breathing new life into the folk songs of Britain.

Roger Stevens – 8pm
www.reverbnation.com/rogerstevens
An author and poet writing mainly for children. Recent books include The Comic Cafe (Frances Lincoln), Beware! Low Flying Rabbits (Macmillan) and an anthology for younger readers – Off By Heart (A&C Black.) He has been playing music for 50 years – in comedy bands (The Killer Rabbits), tribute bands (Jon Lord in Deep Purple) and most recently with the author Ken Follett and the legendary Floella Benjamin. He now performs as a solo artist appearing mainly in folk clubs and acoustic venues. His latest album ‘I Don’t Wish to Alarm You’ can be found on his reverbnation page.

“Roger’s songs are contemporary, relevant and laced with a dash of humour… If I spent an evening with him in a folk club I’d reckon it time well spent.” – Dai Jeffries, Radio 2 (Rock ‘n’ Reel)

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Cheers, Ian, Ruth and Alex x
