The Thorn, formerly known as Large Plants, will showcase their psych-tinged heavy folk-rock under their new name for the very first time on Fri 7 Nov – expect a show infused with jazz, soul and echoes of early ’70s fuzz jams.

Support comes from hypnotic folk singer-songwriter Lucy Kitchen and “Barnstorming, Wild-Roving, Folk Rock” duo The Kahunas!

THE THORN

Initially formed in 2021 to play the solo recordings of founder Jack Sharp (Wolf People), the live band has since grown and changed, developing a life of its own. Joined by bassist Paul Milne (Hanging Stars, Green Seagull) and drummer Itamar Rubinger (Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats), they played many shows supporting the likes of Mudhoney, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Chris Cohen and Johnny Echols’ Love.

In 2024 they were joined by Cambridge singer songwriter Naomi Randall and were able to explore their love of British folk-rock pioneers like Trees, Pentangle, and Fairport Convention. The new name The Thorn was chosen to mark the change whilst acknowledging a continuation of the spirit of the band.

LUCY KITCHEN

Folk singer-songwriter making music spanning Folk, Americana, a little bit of Country, and infused with the feel of 70s singer-songwriters. Lucy’s songs explore concepts of grief and loss. She is inspired by lyrical poets, nature, the seasons and making beauty out of hard things.

In the search for touchstones she is often compared to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Beth Orton and, vocally, to Sandy Denny.

THE KAHUNAS

Indie folk rock duo, The Kahunas bring emotive violin riffs, melodic harmonies and vocals, original lyrical content & digeridoo loops. The pair have been writing, recording and performing together for nearly 4 years. Their musical pendulum swings between upbeat dance folk rock and heart felt love songs.

The Kahunas sound has been likened to bands such as Fleetwood Mac, Fotheringay and The Levellers.
