Joining us for the Des Was A Bowie Fan March jamboree are a collection of bands pulled from a cartoon dream, one of whom makes an immediate return to the club after an ace guest DJ set last time.
Oh!Gunquit are a 5-headed monster whose sound comprises of “a blizzard of horns, spirited howls, buzzsaw guitars and rock’n’roll” – a feral garage punk waltz that’ll make your fishbowl glass levitate while you dance. Their new album ‘Eat Yuppies and Dance’ is a call to arms in such a language, and the band require you to take a few bites of these creatures on your way across from Shoreditch High Street.
Wolf Girl are a different set of sharpened teeth. They return to the night with their swoonsome romantic, electric indiepop after conquering the dancefloor as guest DJs last time out. Queer Punx say what you need to know in one line: “sounds like walking on the beach on a sunny but windy day dressed like James Dean.” Grab their tape on Soft Power Records and get tops off down the front.
Rodents meanwhile are a shambling, summery and psychedelic indiepop band, like the Beach Boys and TV Girl beamed into a UFO and flown over Leytonstone; a sweetly melodic take on Pop with a rare and gentle touch.
Then at 11.30, following a special guest DJ set TBC, Kerouac’s bandanna will fall on the lamplight for the last ever time in the month of March at this wonderful place, which is to become flashy flats for the all-too well adjusted in life, and the ghosts of swing jazz, jive, rock’n’roll, Motown, garage punk and Northern Soul will join the most shimmering, fuck-off indiepop, new wave, post-punk, riot grrrl and klezmer till the milkman comes.
