Double Beat Presents: The Articles / White Fever / The Slack Five

Doubt Beat presents …

The Articles

The Articles were a London six-piece, combining elements of pop, post-punk, disco and dub. Darlings of the London toilet circuit from 2003 to 2007, they released one 7″ single in 2006, the double A- side Monochrome Vigilante / Smacked and Abandoned, which gained critical acclaim in the indie press (“like dancing on hot spikes”) and international airplay. In typically bloody-minded fashion they then split up just as wider recognition beckoned. Drummer Josh Williams went on to play for White Fever, while bassist Jon Parish had several electronic releases as parjo01. Singer James Pratt became one half of Dada electro duo The Junior Ministers (fêted by Tim Minchin among others), and trumpet player J Blakeson went to Hollywood to direct The 5th Wave.

Why get back together? Well, their last gig may have been The Good Ship in Kilburn not Madison Square Garden, but if James Murphy can do it, why can’t they? So here at Paper Dress Vintage in Hackney, to celebrate the digital release of their lost album, How to Read the Articles, is their first gig in nearly 9 years. It should be emotional.

White Fever are a dream-pop band experimenting in ethereal and atmospheric soundscapes. Their debut EP ‘Beating of Wings’ saw them buzzing on the tips of tongues in their east London locale and made a clear dent in the Spotify charts. They are currently recording their second EP ‘Concrete’ and will be playing a brand new live show with tracks from it, their first of 2016.

The Slack Five

The Southampton power trio channel classic 80s and 90s indie to tell everyday stories of allergens, call centres, giant pandas and flying cars. Half Man Half Biscuit meets Dinosaur Jr? Mid-period Fall if Mark E Smith could sing? Maybe. Too old to die young, they’re slack but they know where it’s at, so do the shake and slack and put the freshness back!

Plus Edward Zero (Hot Milk Records) and The Articles DJs playing dub, funk, disco, post-punk, odds and sods, bits and bobs.
