We’re delighted to be hosting the album launch party for Paper Dress favourites Penny Orchids.
The band will play the album from start to finish live, plus there will be copies for sale and plenty of booze (naturally). Here’s a few words from the Orchids themselves…
“Worse Things is split into two parts. In Part 1 the band bulldoze their way through stories of antiheroes, downbeats, severed heads and sinking ships. Through the spasmodically shifting moods, the sound is held together by the constant of the core instruments: sweeping pianos, Morricone guitars, sinister lead sax and baritone vocals over a rhythm section built like a rhino. Additional textures from mandolin, harmonium, accordion and horns punctuate throughout.
Part 2: Maloney Does New York is the six-song concept odyssey of an Irish immigrant to 1930s NYC who falls in with the Jewish mafia. Reminiscent of new breed concept albums like Anaïs Mitchell’s Hadestown, Maloney’s life story provides depth and narrative to the chameleonic twisting musical styles which hint at Tom Waits, Dick Dale, Leonard Cohen, Boney M and Iron Maiden against the backdrop of Depression-era Yiddish America. It’s ridiculous, but never juvenile or silly.
We’re very happy to announce that our special guests for this show will be the excellent Dick Dynamite and the Doppelgangers and Mr Jake Evans from the wonderful Stillhouse Orchestra (who also makes a cameo appearance on our album).
