The Midnight Barbers are a two piece from Chelmsford, Essex. In 2013 they managed to claw together an audience in London, Paris, Berlin and, of course, East Anglia, owing in no small part to their ‘terrifying’ live show, in which the ‘blues bastards’, Ben Rowntree and Jack Pepper, swing wildly between Springsteen style posturing and Tom Waits inspired murder balladry, all set against a highly improvisational and violent soundscape of the sort that would make the Stooges blush, Cohen cartwheel, and Dylan, quite possibly, vomit.
Black Rooster Black Shag
Black Rooster Black Shag was conceived when two solo artists (Mirika, bass/vocals) & JJ Symon (guitar/production) were trapped in an 8th floor apartment during a Melbourne street flood. As they watched cars sinking and people swimming, they spoke of their shared love of garage rock, 50’s harmonies and post-punk, and by the time the rains had stopped the first Black Rooster Black Shag song was born.
Sketching out arrangements on mobile phones while the two completed previous tour commitments, they settled in Brighton (Hove, actually) armed with an album’s worth of dark rock & roll tales. And in Nick Cave’s stomping ground, they met drummer Dan Brown; taking to the stage for the first time at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, Brighton in July 2013. Black Rooster Black Shag is now living happily ever after in a blaze of late night gigs and smelly tour vans.
Three Birds Blind are a four piece band from central Essex. Their sound is an eclectic mix of heavy rock and ambient electro-folk. Lyrically dense and delicately harmonised with an oft pained delivery – this band is one to watch if underneath it all, you’re just not a very happy person. Alternatively, if your friends describe you as ‘plucky’, Three Birds Blind can probably help.
