EXPERIMENTAL BEDROOM POP PIONEER / DARK SYNTH POP
Born in the West Coast of Canada at a time when Depeche Mode and Erasure ruled the airwaves, Nikki Nevver would not come to be influenced by these artists until meeting a young David Sylvian look alike at age 16.
Terror Bird aka Nikki Nevver is a prolific songwriter with over a dozen releases on various worldwide labels including Night School and Rough Trade. She is one of the first wave “bedroom pop” artists, starting out recording on 4 track tape recorders and eventually moving on to a digital 8 track to self-record and mix “All This Time” in her downtown Eastside sublet.
Now leaning into darkwave and singer / songwriter territories, Terror Bird released her first 7 inch on Summer Lover’s Unlimited in 2008 after spending years recording layers onto taped over cassettes using boom boxes in bathrooms, using guitar pedals and contact mics with random objects for drums, and experimenting with erie vocal melodies and eccentric and youthfully naive musical choices.
Her first band was a young all female punk / rock band, Automatic Fancy in which she sang. She then went on to play bass for the first time (RIP) goth post punk band, Modern Creatures at a time this music was not yet in vogue.
Terror Bird is best known for the dark synth bedroom pop album “All This Time.” (Night School Recs), the track she penned for Odonis Odonis, “Brilliant Things” and music videos for Waiting for Nothing and The Wrong Way. Her debut lo-fi self recorded cassette, “Sociopaths are Glam” included covers of Bronski Beat and Jesus and Mary Chain and originals which were well liked in the underground.
Singles like Cemeteries, and Shadows in the Halls from the Rough Trade compilation including Fever Ray, Zola Jesus, Cold Cave, and Grimes) are fan favourites. She has released full albums such as , and Secret Rituals, All This Time, and most recently, Deathless Wild and Free with Subterrenean Lovers, an album influenced heavily by 70s glam 60s folk, and even Lana Del Rey.
In recent years, Nikki Nevver has teamed up with producers Jason Corbett (ACTORS) to re- record songs to give live performance a fresh sound and Jordan Koop, who was mentored by The Pixies/Nirvana producer Steve Albini.
SILENT STAR (LONDON)
WIDESCREEN MELODY, BRUTALISM WITH A BEAT
Silent Star are a coldwave/synthpop duo from London whose “sparkling, soaring synth waves” embody “the rhythm of concrete walls”.
They amassed close to 200,000 plays on YouTube after being picked up by German label, Young and Cold, who the band on the back of the success of their self-released debut single Star Of The Sea.
The duo has gone on to release chillingly well-written singles like The Cross Of Stamford Hill, The Estuary Shore, and The Cold Now, a duet with the Terror Bird singer Nikki Nevver.
Their unique brand of cold wave (with hints of Suede + Soft Cell in the vocals) have made huge waves in the dark music scene. Silent Star has released several iconic music videos and mixes by Hallhuber and the Antipole associate Paris Alexander.
Silent Star has toured Europe with labelmates Videotraum (DE) and Terror Bird. They have headlined the legendary London goth night, Slimelight and have supported Xeno & Oaklander, the KVB and M!R!M.
